Equipment FAQs

Glove Weight: 12oz vs 14oz vs 16oz — Which Should I Choose?

Glove weight affects both hand protection and the level of impact delivered to your sparring partner. There is no one-size-fits-all answer, and your gym's sparring rules should always be your first reference point.

  • 12oz — Common for bag and pad work, or for lighter individuals in some training settings. Generally considered less suitable for regular partner sparring due to reduced padding.
  • 14oz — A popular middle ground often used by intermediate-weight boxers (roughly 63–75 kg) for both bag work and controlled sparring. Check your gym's rules before using 14oz for contact sessions.
  • 16oz — Widely recommended for sparring across most gyms, particularly for heavier or harder-hitting athletes. The additional padding helps protect both you and your training partner.

Always confirm the required glove weight with your coach or gym before any sparring session. Our Alpha White & Red Sparring Gloves are built for hard training sessions — check the product page for available sizes and weight options.

Wrap Length: 120 Inch vs 180 Inch — What Do I Need?

Hand wraps protect the small bones in your hands and wrists by stabilising the joints before you put on your gloves. The right length depends primarily on the size of your hands.

  • 120-inch (3m) wraps — Better suited to smaller hands. They provide adequate coverage but leave less material for additional passes around the knuckles or wrist.
  • 180-inch (4.5m) wraps — The most widely used length, suitable for most adult hand sizes. They allow more passes across the knuckles and around the wrist, giving a more secure, customised wrap.

If you are unsure, 180-inch wraps are generally the safer choice as the excess can always be trimmed into the wrap. Our Bravose Pro 4.5M Boxing Hand Wraps are 4.5 metres (approximately 180 inches) long and designed for a firm, supportive fit.

Mouthguard Fitting: How Do I Fit a Boil-and-Bite Gum Shield?

A properly fitted mouthguard is essential for sparring. A loose or ill-fitting guard will not offer the protection it is designed to provide. Boil-and-bite mouthguards are moulded to your teeth at home following these general steps:

  1. Boil water — Bring water to the boil, then remove from heat and allow it to cool for 30–60 seconds so it is hot but not violently boiling.
  2. Submerge the guard — Place the mouthguard in the hot water for the time specified in the product instructions (typically 30–60 seconds) until it softens.
  3. Cool briefly — Remove the guard and dip it in cold water for just 1–2 seconds to make it comfortable enough to place in your mouth without burning.
  4. Bite and mould — Place it over your upper teeth, bite down firmly, and use your fingers to press the guard against your teeth and gums. Suck in to help form the seal.
  5. Set in cold water — Submerge in cold water for 30 seconds to set the shape.
  6. Check the fit — The guard should stay in place without you biting down. If it feels loose or uncomfortable, you can remould it by repeating the process.

Always follow the specific instructions included with your mouthguard, as timing may vary. We stock two options to suit personal preference:

Important: A mouthguard is mandatory for sparring in most gyms. Always follow your gym's rules regarding approved protective equipment before any contact session.
